The ideal pregnancy hospital bag…

Posted by on Friday, 21 January, 2011

When you’re in the last few weeks of your pregnancy, you can never one hundred per cent sure when your labour will start and as such, you should ensure that you have a well packed hospital bag in preparation for any eventuality. But what items should you pack? Well, the ideal hospital bag will comprise both essentials and less-essential items that will act as comforts for the uncomfortable process ahead.

My recommendations:

  • Isotonic drinks are great for keeping you hydrated during labour and will likely fare far better than the water the hospital will supply.
  • Packing your birthing plan and maternity notes may seem obvious but you would be surprised how many expectant mothers forget to do so!
  • Those with long hair may wish to pack a hairband hair in your face isn’t great at the best of times, let alone during birth!
  • A well charged iPod or MP3 player is a good idea since music is soothing and it is doubtful that NHS staff will let you plug anything electrical in to their sockets.
  • Your favorite cushion is a good idea as those supplied by the NHS may not comfortable enough.
  • Nursing bras, (old) knickers and a suitable outfit to travel home in, for clear reasons!
  • A dressing gown and socks you can get surprisingly cold during labour!
  • Though you probably won’t care too much about having cosmetics and beauty gifts to hand you may wish to pack tiny toiletries like those that are given away at hotels and spa breaks to keep you feeling fresh. Don’t forget your tooth brush!

In addition, you should also ensure that you have packed a blanket, adequate clothing and toiletries for your baby!

A sweet idea is for the baby’s dad to sneak little surprises into mum’s hospital bag (as long as they won’t get in the way of the more readily required items). After my friend had given birth, she found some spa gift vouchers that her BF had sneaked into her bag as a reward for all of her hard work.

Prenatal and Being pregnant

Posted by on Tuesday, 30 November, 2010

Prenatal vitamins are one of the most important vitamins that you just take by manner of out your pregnancy. Ideally, you must start taking prenatal vitamins if you end up trying to conceive a baby. By taking prenatal if you are attempting to conceive, you may be getting ready your body for the challenging job that lies ahead. Some experts imagine that taking prenatal earlier than you would possibly be pregnant may actually reduce your threat of a miscarriage after you grow to be pregnant.

Taking prenatal before pregnancy just isn’t at all times attainable for some folks, however taking them throughout being pregnant is essential. Prenatal nutritional vitamins comprise one of the most essential vitamins that a new mom needs and which may be folic acid or folate. By taking in extra folic acid, you decrease your probabilities of your baby being born with an incomplete spinal column which is identified as spina bifida. In order for your baby to be protected, it is crucial that folic acid is taken in the first four weeks of fetal development.

This generally is a downside for girls who don’t take prenatals before they’re pregnant. More often than not, most ladies do not know they’re pregnant until after they missed their interval which is about two weeks after conception. This is the reason if you’re of child bearing age, you must make it a behavior of taking folic acid even in case you are not planning to grow to be pregnant and we all know that not all pregnancies are planned.

You’ll have the ability to still get your folic acid in food. Folic acid is added to many breads and pastas and is present in darkish inexperienced and orange fruits in addition to vegetables. Take into account though that taking a each day complement of folic acid presents extra safety from spina bifida then eating the identical amount of folic acid in food.

While you’re pregnant you want to aim to take not much less than 600mcg of folic acid a day. You probably have had a baby with a neural tube defect, you could have to take 4000 mcg or four milligrams of folic acid every day, beginning a minimum of a month earlier than you get pregnant.

Some women report that they can not take their prenatals especially of their first trimester. Women who suffer from morning illness and food aversions find that they can not eat much food. Taking a prenatal on an empty stomach can depart you feeling sick and queasy which is why so many women in the first trimester do not take them. One more reason some women report upset stomachs is due to the high iron stage that some prenatals have. Not solely may this cause an upset stomach, this may additionally result in constipation which can already be a problem for some pregnant women.

In case you discover that you’d give you the chance to not take your prenatal, speak to your physician to see if he can give you a prenatal with less iron or give you a folic acid supplement also. The worst thing you may do is just not take something, especially throughout those first few weeks.

The Smoking in Pregnancy Effects – The Dangers

How Smoking in Pregnancy Effects Your New Baby

Smoking in Pregnancy

Today, considerable scientific studies have been carried out that has clearly demonstrated the adverse effects of smoking in pregnancy on all stages of reproduction, including conception, growth and development of the uterus, miscarriage rates, births and early childhood development.

There is a definite link between the amount you smoke and the harmful negative effects this has on you and your baby.  If you are a heavy tobacco smoker, you will do more damage to your growing foetus than if you are a casual smoker, but all smoking will cause some form of foetal damage.  Nicotine makes the blood vessels in your placenta constrict, which makes it more difficult for oxygen and essential nutrients to get to your baby.  Damage can occur to your baby at any stage during your pregnancy, but smoking in the second and third trimesters – which is three months after – carries a more significant risk to your baby.  This is the crucial part of your baby’s development.  Even if you don’t smoke, but your partner does, you may experience passive smoking, which can have just the same effect on foetal development as if you were smoking!

The effects of smoking can be reversible.  If you stop smoking before you conceive, you may possibly avoid the negative consequences, even if you’ve been smoking for a couple of years.  Your baby will also benefit from you not smoking in pregnancy and also after they are born.

Scientific studies have shown that smoking in pregnancy effects:

  • Couples who smoke suffer from infertility more than non-smokers, and can also take longer to conceive
  • Smoking can also cause significant problems with a woman’s menstrual cycle that may affect her ability to conceive
  • Men who smoke sometimes have a problem getting and maintaining an erection
  • Men who smoke can find their testosterone levels reduced, which also affects the development and quality of their sperm.
  • Smoking has been associated with higher levels of miscarriage, spontaneous abortions and ectopic pregnancies
  • Women who smoke during their pregnancy, will more likely have a premature birth or have low birth weights
  • Smoking during pregnancy can also increase the risk of complications at birth and also Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  • Heavy smokers may also have a higher chance of giving birth to babies with a cleft palate or hare-lip

So, if ever there was a good reason to quit or dramatically stop smoking in pregnancy, or hopefully just cut down on your smoking habits, then this is it.

Many women may find that they suffer from nausea during the early stages of pregnancy and this can sometimes be a great place in taking the first step in quitting – drinking less coffee and alcohol can also help.

Estrogen Infertility And How It Affects You

Posted by on Monday, 8 November, 2010

Several factors contribute to infertility and estrogen infertility is just one of them. Every one of the many hormones involved in reproduction plays an essential role and estrogen is the key female reproductive hormone, sort of like what testosterone is for men. Signs that you lack estrogen is seen such as frequent headaches, night sweats, hot flashes and even vaginal dryness. It is also notable that low quantities of estrogen can lead to infertility in varied ways:

Because estrogen directs the uterus to form a lining that receives the zygote, even if every other process has succeeded before that, if there is not enough lining then the fertilized egg won’t implant in the uterus’ wall.

Estrogen stimulates the mucus that goes out of the cervix to make it less gelatinous and easier for the sperm to swim through for it to reach the ovum.

Having low estrogen could cause you not to ovulate.

Having high levels of estrogen relative to progesterone will also cause you some difficulties. There is risk for estrogen dominance if you are not eating properly, under stress, obese or exposed to other sources of estrogen. This may be through hormone replacement therapy or through environmental sources. This too can cause estrogen infertility if you are not cautious.

So how would you know if you have excessive supply of estrogen? You will experience heart palpitations, excessive weight gain, depression, irregular periods, swelling, cyclical headaches, constant nervousness and some digestive problems. But all these symptoms may also mean low estrogen level so you have to get yourself checked every so often.

Significant note: having the appropriate concentration of estrogen is often needed for fertility. Having either high or low estrogen levels bring about the same result: estrogen infertility. The good news is that this may be prevented through medication and with the right supervision and it won’t obstruct pregnancy. Natural remedies abound and they are useful. Tofu and yams are known for estrogenic value but not many medical literature has publicize their benefits.

Indeed it is important from a medical point of view to diagnose and treat low estrogen levels since this may cause emotional and psychological problems from late puberty and also hampered fertility. When you are suspecting an infertility problem, take note that there are certain things to consider such as cervical mucus changes. Taking your basal body temperature and noting cervical position changes is important because such information can be very helpful in detecting and treating fertility related problems.

In conclusion, there can never be a better answer to the issue of estrogen infertility than knowing your body very well and whatever warning signs it may be sending off towards your direction.

Pregnancy and Conception

Understanding Pregnancy and Conception

How the process of pregnancy and conception works!

Pregnancy and conceptionConception is the first stage in a baby’s 9 month journey through pregnancy.  It all begins at the fertilization stage – where sperm and ovum unite, and this marks the start to a new and exciting  beginning – human life!  This process continues rapidly until the dividing cells that forms the tiny embryo implants itself into the protective and nourishing environment of the endometrium lining of the woman’s uterus.

When a man ejaculates into a woman during intercourse, the semen spurts out into the top layers of the woman’s vagina and deposits literally millions of sperm.  This may seem like an astonishing amount considering that there is just one ovum waiting to be fertilized, but there is generally a 99% chance that the remainder of the semen will drain away from the vagina after intercourse.

Pregnancy and conception – a sperm’s journey

Of the 500 million or so sperm released with each ejaculation, only around 100 will survive the journey up through the uterus and the Fallopian tubes to the meet the waiting ovum or egg.  Some sperm will enter the cervix directly after ejaculation, but the majority will start their upward battle around 5 to 40 minutes after ejaculation, where the semen literally liquefies after initially clotting.

In the days that are leading up to the woman’s ovulation, her mucus forms penetrable swimming channels through her cervix.  The prostaglandin hormones that are found in the man’s semen will help the sperm travel towards the site of fertilization by causing the muscle contractions in the uterus and the Fallopian tubes, which brings the sperm and ovum much closer together.  Some sperm may reach the Fallopian tube within a few minutes of ejaculation, where others, may take a bit longer, say a day or two.  This means that some sperm are capable of fertilizing an ovum up to 5 days after intercourse.

The sperm is nourished on its journey by the secretions in the seminal fluid and the cervical mucus.  For example, one chemical from the epididymis which is also known as carnatine helps the sperm mature, while the zinc rich prostatic secretions will protect the sperm from certain infections.  The sperm will also benefit from certain chemicals that are found in the cervical and uterine fluids, making it possible for the sperm to penetrate the ovum before the actual fertilization.

The process of this stimulation is commonly known as capacitation, which causes the outer layer of the sperm head (the acrosome tip) to leak some potent enzymes that will help dissolve the membrane surrounding the ovum.

Once the sperm makes contact with the ovum, their enzymes will break down and the sperm enters the woman’s ovum, leaving it’s tail behind in the process.  (this will contain the father’s 23 chromosomes) The successful sperm will then stimulate the ovum to finish the second meiotic division, so that the 23 single chromosomes from the mother’s gene pool appear.  At this magical moment, all other sperm are excluded and the genetic material from the father’s sperm and the mother’s ovum fuse together to form a new and unique combination.  This newly fertilized ovum will now contain the 46 chromosomes with all the genetic material needed to divide, grow and develop into a perfectly formed human baby!

When it comes to pregnancy and conception, it’s important to understand the journey that the sperm takes to finally and successful reach its destination.  The sperms journey to reach the ovum or woman’s egg is a uphill struggle, filled with many hurdles, and the successful sperm who finally makes it to the ovum, has the capacity to create a new life.  Pregnancy and conception is a journey of life, that begins with one sperm’s journey.

The magic of pregnancy and conception is something that we should never take for granted, as it’s an amazing achievement with the sperm only having one goal in mind – implant into the ovum!

I hope you enjoyed reading about the wonderful journey of pregnancy and conception!

Get Me Pregnant Now, I Hear You Yell!

Don’t worry – there’s a much better and healthier way to ‘Get me pregnant‘ shout!

Get me pregnantI remember when I was trying to get pregnant and yelling at my husband to ‘get me pregnant now’ or else, and seeing the look of pain on his face. It might have looked quite hilarious from another person’s point of view, but it really wasn’t all that funny. It was emotionally draining trying to get pregnant, and having no success. I knew of friends who were trying longer than I was, and that wasn’t very comforting either. They were trying IVF and infertility drugs which were all very expensive, not to mention acupuncture, alternative therapies, and still there wasn’t any pregnancy.

Sounding familiar to you? Do you hear yourself telling your partner to “Get me pregnant….now!”.. If this is the case, then you definitely need to read on…

Most conventional therapies, such as infertility drugs, IVF, GIFT, IUI, etc, just will not work if your body is not in in optimal health.  What I mean by optimal health, is when your body is in poor health due to poor eating or over eating,  consuming too many processed foods that are high in chemicals, all of which are swimming around in your body.  This certainly doesn’t make it a healthy environment from which to have a healthy pregnancy.  A body that’s in poor health, isn’t going to become easily pregnant.

Here are a number of steps that can help you overcome the ‘get me pregnant’ rant…

The Number One Factor to Causing infertility:-

The biggest reason that contributes to infertility is a poor diet. The main thing you need to avoid when trying to get pregnant is bottle water, and foods that are wrapped in plastic.  These all contain a chemical called BPA.  BPA or Bisphenol A, which can cause miscarriages in women and a low sperm count in men.  When you consume products such as bottle water, canned foods or use plastic products, you are in contact with BPA. Did you know that canned good are lined with BPA.  How many times do you eat from a can?

Additional foods that should be avoided is artificial sugar, caffeine, alcohol and all artificial food colorings, such as MSG. The best way to avoid this dilemma, especially when you are trying to get pregnant, is to avoid any labeling that you can’t pronounce or you don’t know exactly what it is.   Make sure you read labels carefully.  Also, eat organic products, such as meat and poultry, as the majority of store bought meats contain parasites, hormones, and other toxic compounds.  Fish or seafood should also be avoided as they can contain heavy metals such as mercury.

Foods That Will Increase Your Fertility and Create A Successful Pregnancy:-

Try to eat a variety of raw organic fruits and vegetables. Today a majority of fruits and vegetables that are bought in your local grocery store have some pesticides sprayed on them.  This is one contributor to both male and female infertility. Cooking the vegetables also destroys some of the harmful chemicals that are on them, but they will also destroy many of the valuable trace elements, such as minerals, enzymes and antioxidants that your body needs to have a healthy pregnancy.   Consuming a raw diet that doesn’t require too much cooking is a great alternative and a sure way to create a healthy body for pregnancy.

Are you still thinking you should yell at your partner to ” get me pregnant now”?  Hopefully you’ve come to realize that a change in diet and lifestyle can dramatically improve your conceiving ratio.

Trying to Conceive Tips?

Alternative Options For Trying To Conceive And Have a Baby..

Here are Five Alternative Steps for Trying to Conceive

Alternative Options For Trying to Conceive

Trying to ConceiveFor many couples, having a baby is a dream come true. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen. If you’re finding it hard to get pregnant, then there are many alternative methods that you can discuss with your physician and partner.  Trying to conceive when you are both emotionally stressed can only add to the problem.

Who’s responsible for not getting pregnant? There isn’t any reason to find yourself in that kind of debate. Either partner, or perhaps equally both partners, could possibly have health concerns that create a roadblock regarding a successful conception. The actual emotional stress involved when attempting to conceive could possibly make things worse. Lets forget about pointing fingers and examine these alternatives for trying to conceive and get pregnant.

1. In-Vitro Fertilization – This fertility technique has been around and used for many years now, with a lot of enhancements added over the years. To put it simply, this method is utilized to bring together the egg and sperm outside of the body. Occasionally, but not always, the problem is with the system of reproduction instead of the egg or sperm by itself.  The eggs are removed from the women’s uterus and placed in a solution together with the male’s sperm. The eggs are then fertilized by the sperm and subsequently inserted back into the women’s uterus for possible, and hopefully a successful implantation into the uterine wall.

2. Donor Eggs – Yes, there’s a procedure for acquiring eggs from another woman. This would be similar as when men donate their sperm to a sperm bank. In this case the problem is with the eggs and by simply using another women’s healthy eggs, which are combined with their partner’s sperm.  This may be another alternative regarding you and also your partner. In-vitro fertilization methods are widely used to implant the fertilized egg into the uterus.

3. Artificial Insemination – This method can be used by any women who desires a child but doesn’t have a male partner or maybe whose male partner can’t provide the sperm. Women in these types of circumstances get the chance to select the sperm from a sperm bank or, in some instances, a donor that has decided to supply the sperm. As soon as the woman is ovulating, the sperm is inserted into the uterus or perhaps the cervix, hopefully to bring the egg and also the donated sperm together for fertilization.

4. Surrogate Birth – Women who simply cannot get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term, may possibly consider getting in contact with a surrogacy network. In such cases, a woman will act as a surrogate and contract together with the couple to carry their child. This process requires artificial insemination while using the partner’s sperm. This particular method of childbirth might be problematic from a legal viewpoint. There has been cases of court battles regarding the legal rights of the surrogate versus the contracting family.  This specific method should always include your attorney and also a reputable surrogate agency right right from the start of negotiations.  Just to be on the safe side.

5. Intrafallopian Transfer – This kind of technique entails extracting an egg and also the sperm and reintroducing them into the fallopian tube at different stages to encourage fertilization and implantation to happen naturally. To begin with, the egg and sperm are injected into the fallopian tube and secondly, the two are allowed to fertilize outside the body and are re-injected into the fallopian tube the moment the zygote phase is achieved.

In the event the traditional method is no longer working for both of you, there are many alternatives available now when you are trying to conceive a child.  Begin by first talking to your physician or medical practitioner as soon as you realize that you’re starting to become discouraged and possibly even depressed. Your medical professional can help reduce your fears and will also be able to guide you when it comes to choosing the best solution for you and partner for trying to conceive and start a family.

For alternative treatments, consider a more holistic approach.  Pregnancy Miracle is a scientifically proven program that helps women become pregnant naturally, by first re-balancing their body with natural foods.  This creates a healthier environment from which healthy fertilisation happens.  Learn more here on trying to conceive.
